PARENTS WANT PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE FOR KIDS’ SAFETY17 Feb 2005By NG WEI LOON
A primary school pupil hurrying across the road with his schoolbag.MORE than eight months after a pedestrian bridge in Petaling Jaya was demolished, residents of the municipality continue to dice with danger every time they cross the busy Jalan Semangat in Section 14.
On June 28 last year, a crane damaged the overhead pedestrian bridge that had served the students of SRK Seri Petaling and SMK Bukit Bintang for a long time.
Although the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) attempted to fix the bridge, the crack on the beam was found to be beyond repair. The overhead bridge was demolished a few days after the incident.
The delayed replacement of the bridge has endangered about 1,300 students attending the schools.
When SRK Seri Petaling’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members met MPPJ officials in September last year and queried why legal action was not taken against the vehicle owner for the replacement of the bridge, the officials declined to comment.
In a recent meeting with the association, the council claimed that the zebra crossing at the traffic lights in Jalan Semangat was adequate.
SRK Seri Petaling PTA president Nik Ariza Ariffin said there was an urgent need for a new bridge as the primary schoolchildren were vulnerable and exposed to danger whenever they had to cross Jalan Semangat.
She said a bridge was needed as it was the best measure to prevent an accident.
“We do not need to have a fatal accident before we act on this matter. The MPPJ cited financial constraint as a reason for rejecting our request for a new bridge.
Indira accompanying her son Visvamba home after school.“We feel that the social and emotional costs outweigh the financial cost,” said Ariza, who has three children aged between 8 and 12 years old.
Dr Azhar Ariffin said he made it a point to pick up his children from the main entrance.
“From September to November last year, the PTA hired a‘lollipop man' (traffic attendant) to help the children cross the road. Teachers also assisted in the programme. It has stopped because of its ineffectiveness. Those who were assisting the children were exposed to risk, too,” he said.
Another issue that the PTA is alarmed about is the traffic congestion and chaos during the peak hours at lunchtime and after office hours.
A simple daily routine of dropping and picking up their children takes almost half an hour when parents make the extra effort to ensure their children’s safety.
Nora Md Yusof, a mother of four children between the ages of seven and 13 years who are studying at SRK Seri Petaling and SMK Bukit Bintang, is one of them.
“I am taking time off work for the sake of my children. I feel that it is better to be safe than sorry.
“Previously, I dropped my children off and waited for them at the playground on the other side of the road as I was assured that they would cross the road safely using the overhead pedestrian bridge.
“It is no longer safe for them to cross the road. So, I pick them up near the gate. I am forced to drive around the block because I realised that I will be causing traffic congestion if I am to park by the side of the road,” said Nora, a businesswoman.
Another concerned mother is Indira Nathan. She walks her two sons, nine-year-old Visvamba Nathan and Shailesh, who is eight, to school. Visvamba is in the morning session while his brother goes to school in the afternoon.
Ariza and Dr Azhar waiting to cross the road at the zebra crossing.“There are a number of children who live just across the road in the Section 14 neighbourhood. MPPJ should be looking into building a new bridge to cater to the children’s need,” Indira pointed out.
“The bridge has been there for such a long time before the incident last year,” said A. Kannathasan, a PTA committee member.
Despite the zebra crossing provided by MPPJ to replace the demolished bridge, Kannathasan said there were several close shaves.
“Accidents are bound to happen if this issue is not resolved quickly,” he added.
MPPJ public relations executive Zainon Zakaria said the children’s safety was also the council’s number one priority.
“At the moment, we have to make do with just the zebra crossing.” Zainon added that MPPJ would also be putting up traffic signboard and rail guard on the pavement as additional safety measures.
The signboard, to be placed 20m from the traffic light at the junction of Jalan Kemajuan and Jalan Semangat, is to alert motorists about the existence of the zebra crossing. The rail guard along the road will be erected to make sure that the children walk on the pavement.
